Faber-Castell and the Environment

Faber-Castell in harmony with nature

As the world's leading manufacturer of wood-cased pencils, Faber-Castell has always been concerned for the future of wood as raw material.

Forestry plantations help preserve and maintain native forests by providing an alternative and renewable resource for our future generations.

In Brazil, the company uses wood from its managed forests, planted on former barren savannah and maintains its own tree nurseries. Seedlings are continually planted to replace each row of trees felled: a sustainable ecological cycle. Over a million young trees of type Pinus caribaea are planted each year on a total area of some 100 square kilometres, thousands of kilometres from the endangered Amazon rainforests.

The Faber-Castell forests and factories have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for "environmentally compatible, socially equitable and economically sustainable forestry". The chain of custody certificate guarantees that the timber can be traced from harvesting right through to the finished pencils.

Faber-Castell is active in preserving the native flora and fauna of the Brazilian savannah. The Faber-Castell woodlands provide a habitat for 178 species of birds, 36 mammal species and 40 species of reptiles.

Sustainability means responsibility for the future

Conserving natural resources is just one part of Faber-Castells commitment to a better quality of life. As part of an “integrated product policy”, the entire life-cycle of our products is subject to critical analysis in order to minimise the long-term energy requirements.

Waste timber from pencil production is used to generate heat.
Faber-Castell headquarters in Stein had its own water-powered electricity generator.
Through rigorous waste seperation, the reclying rate in Faber-Castell companies is 88%

Faber-Castell is the only company to use environmentally-friendly, water-based paint for all its wood-cased pencils - another significant pioneering step.

CO2 Neutral

The Faber-Castell group is CO2 neutral. Thanks to a series of energy saving measures over the last three years Faber-Castell has halved its CO2 emmisions. The companys own forrests absorb almost five times the amount of CO2 produced by its production sites.
