A Brief History Of Faber-Castell

 
 

In 1761, cabinet maker Kaspar Faber settled in Stein, near Nuremberg, in Germany to make his first simple pencils.
He took extra care to plane and glue each of them by hand.
This quality craftsmanship proved successful and sales of his quality pencils flourished at the Nuremberg market.
The dynasty of Pencil-makers had begun.

Lothar von Faber

 

The mid-19th Century saw Kasper's Great-Grandson Lothar transform the company by mechanising production. This achieved a consistency of quality previously unheard of. Furthermore, he invented the hexagonal pencil and created standards for pencil size and grades of hardness still are in use today. Lothar marked his products A. W. Faber, after his Grandfather Anton Wilhelm.These were the first ever Brand Name Writing products, and amongst the earliest branded articles in the world.
Offices were opened in New York, London, Paris, Vienna and St Petersburg.
In 1863, Lothar was elevated to the position of Baron, in recognition of his achievements and services to the community.
When Lothar died in 1896, A. W. Faber products were winning exhibition certificates, awards and medals all over the world.

Ottilie von Faber

 

In 1896, Lothar's Grand-daughter Ottilie became heir to the family business.
In 1898, she married Count Alexander zu Castell - Rudenhausen, a descendant of one of the oldest families of Bavarian nobility and the family name became Faber –Castell.
In the early years of the 20th century, a castle was built in the grounds next to production facility, whose historic architecture and elegant rooms played host for decades to family, nobility and guests from around the world.

Count Roland von Faber-Castell

 
 

In 1928, Count Roland succeeded Count Alexander to become head of the company. In 1954 he opended a Faber-Castell factory in Fermoy, County Cork. The factory was so sucessful that a new larger factory was built 12 years later at the same site

Anton Wolfgang von Faber-Castell

 

After 50 Years at the head of the company, Count Roland handed its running to his son, Anton Wolfgang.
Since then, the company has significantly expanded its Global operations.
It now employs over 6,000 people, has 15 production sites, and 20 sales organizations, together with representation in over 120 countries around the world.
The simple pencil manufacturer has developed into a world leader in writing, drawing and colour-related products, and has extended into private-label cosmetics.
Today, the Faber –Castell Company is more successful than ever.
Throughout eight generations, spanning three centuries of operation, the family’s vision has remained the same.
